The fires in Maui, Hawaii, are unprecedented within the state, with unusually dry circumstances and wind gusts driving the blazes.
Dr. Craig Clements – professor of Meteorology, director of the Wildlife Interdisciplinary Research Center and the Fire Weather Research Laboratory at San José State College, and a Triple-I non-resident scholar – explains that these blazes are similar to fires that happen in California, together with the lethal Camp Fireplace, and within the Mediterranean, just like the Mati Fireplace in Greece, each of which occurred in 2018.
“Whenever you mix very dry fuels and excessive winds, you get excessive charges of unfold,” Clements mentioned. “You’re getting excessive fireplace habits.”
The Maui fireplace — just like the Mati Fireplace in Greece — is now trapping folks between the land and sea, inflicting massive numbers of deaths, Clements mentioned. At least 55 people have died within the Maui fireplace. The 2018 Camp Fireplace caused at least 85 civilian fatalities and injured 12 civilians and 5 firefighters.
